Often we have a room in our house, sometimes the whole house that we wish was a little bigger.  Unless you’re ready to undergo some major renovations you may not be able to make the room physically bigger BUT there are a few things you can do to make the room FEEL bigger.

1. Use light paint colours

Light colours will make a room feel light and airy.  It reflects light and maximises the natural light in the room, giving the illusion that the walls are further back and the room is bigger than it actually is.

If you love colour then you can always incorporate more bold choices into art work and decor to let your personality shine through.

2. Use Mirrors

Don’t worry I’m not suggesting you install an intire wall of mirrors, however having some large beautiful, decorative mirrors can not only look wonderful and add to your overall design.  They also reflect the light and give the illusion of, you got it a larger space.  If you orient the mirror to a the focal point in the room it will give the illusion of depth

3. Keep Window Dressings Simple

Window dressings are a great way to make a room look and feel luxurious, but you want them to compliment the room not steal away valuable space.

When you’re trying to create the illusion of space I would recommend keeping them simple and stylish adding valances and thick curtains can make the room feel tight.

I would recommend adding simple blinds or shutters and if you want to install curtains place the rod closer to the ceiling rather than the top of the window.

4. Decorate thoughtfully

Petite sized rooms don’t necessarily need petite furniture.  We certainly don’t want to stuff a room full of furniture but well fitting furniture will make a room feel bigger.  Opt for a few key pieces in plain fabrics and that can serve multiple purposes.  E.g an ottoman that serves as a footstall and coffee table.
